Toto or Thank You for Life

Born with unclear sex in a cold GDR circle hall, Toto – arbitrarily called "he" – grows up with an overtaxed mother, lands in the children's home, where you torture him, then with brutal foster parents and finally flee to the west. There he becomes a woman, but now, otherwise unchanged, he endures the impositions of capitalism. Toto finds consolation alone in singing – and in the love for Kasimir, the friend from childhood days, who, however, is secretly working on Toto's final destruction.

Sibylle Berg has adapted her novel Thank you for life itself for the stage and supplemented it with lyrics, for the premiere of Beni Brachtel.
"Berg writes funny about the sad existence of the people, touching about the desolate existence and aggressively lovingly against a dark world. The story may still seem so gloomy, its passion speaks another language." (Frankfurter Rundschau)
"Hear the determination to take note exclusively of the raven black, there is a moral appeal, a crazy hope and a simple question: Why do we get anger citizens at best, but never what Toto embodies: friendly people say thank you for life, which is easy and senseless at some point?» (Theatre today)
"Until later, Toto is looking for the good, beautiful, true. But the bad, mountain leaves no doubt about it, these are the others. Those we are." (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung)
